Date Night by Bike: 3 Great Spots in San Francisco

Date night … Sounds fun in theory, but so hard to actually do. Finding a time that works for both people, plus a sitter, plus figuring out where to go and what to do. It ain’t easy. But so worth it when you do pull it off.

So, assuming you’ve found a date and sitter, here are some great, free or cheap locations to visit on date night in San Francisco — all reachable by our bikes. And yes, you can carry your spouse/partner on your family bike! Double up, or ride on your own bikes, and go!

Grand View Park

1. Grand View Park

Most people have never heard of this park, except maybe the mural on the Moraga Street steps. But this chillaxed hilltop park is actually best enjoyed at sunset or after with your sweetheart. The top of the park has a well placed bench that lets you enjoy a 360 degree view of the city, gazing into the stars and ocean. Head up before or after dinner and/or drinks in the surrounding neighborhoods. Pro tip: bring some layers for the wind and closed shoes to walk through the sandy path.

  • Getting there: From the East, take 8th Avenue to Moraga and park at the bottom of the hill and park. From the West, take the Ortega bike lane to 16th Avenue to the bottom of the Moraga Street steps and lock up.

Church of 8 Wheels

2. Church of 8 Wheels

Take two wheels to four. This San Francisco institution, which may be disappearing soon, is a must do. While the Church offers family skate sessions on Saturday afternoons, it also has adults-only skate fun times on Friday and Saturday nights. DJ, smoke machine and fun in motion. Wear your most San Francisco going out clothes, or not. It’s an open, welcoming place for all kinds. Pro tip: bring long socks.

  • Getting there: From the East, take the Wiggle from Market and then head up Fillmore from Duboce. From the West, take Page Street and then head up Fillmore for two blocks.

3. Arcade at the Century San Francisco Centre

You no doubt know this mall for its movie theatre, food court, etc. But have you noticed the decent little arcade tucked away in the corner of the movie theater area on the top floor? It’s a fun room of throwback and new cheap thrills: Galaga! Pac Man! Air hockey! Bring cash to exchange for tokens and challenge your partner/spouse to some low brain power fun. This date location is definitely best on weekdays, when the crowds are thin.

  • Getting there: Take Market to 5th Street and lock up (bring extra locks) in the Mission Street Garage. Or bike to your express local MUNI or BART station, lock up and take the train in (e.g., Forest Hill MUNI station, Glen Park BART station, Duboce Park MUNI station, etc).

Happy Bike Date Night!
